Goals and Objectives

Consistent with the general purposes of arts education, theatre arts education will:

1. Assist the student's understanding of the development of theatre as a universal response to the human need for expression of feelings and beliefs.

2. Develop the student's understanding of the attitudes and beliefs of people in different times and places as communicated through theatre.

3. Involve students in the practical applications of theatre in writing, directing, performing and technical production in traditional and non-traditional theatrical forms through developmental and activity-oriented processes.

4. Involve students in activities which help them to use and control the emotions for communication, strengthening the imagination, expanding intellectual horizons to include an aesthetic awareness, and providing a basic understanding and critical appreciation of theatre arts.

5. Involve students in the study of dramatic literature and criticism from a variety of periods and places.

6. Help students develop observation and communication skills, and the ability to exercise critical thinking and make decisions through theatrical experiences.

7. Help students develop confidence, personal discipline, and the ability to work effectively with others.

8. Help students realize creative potential and be involved in the creative process.

9. Involve students in the integration of theatre arts study with other areas of the curriculum and the development of a philosophy of theatre arts and theatre arts education.

10. Prepare students for future educational, avocational and/or vocational theatre arts experiences.
