INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION

04.08.08

The purpose of Instructional Assistance is to develop teaching skills in a mentored college-level environment.  This experience is best suited for students who aspire to be teachers or wish to deepen their knowledge of the subject matter via teaching practice.

  • To be an Instructional Assistant (IA) you must hold a junior or senior standing.
  • You must have completed the course you wish to assist, or clearly demonstrate  mastery in that subject area.
  • You must complete an “Instructional Assistantship” form in the main office (CW room 110) and register for the IA class—not the class in which you are assisting.
  • Both you and the instructor of record should communicate with the IA coordinator regularly (e.g. monthly).  The IA coordinator is listed in the schedule of classes and will act as a third-party for communication or conflict resolution.
  • IA’s should never be left alone with the class, or perceived as the instructor of record.
  • IA’s cannot have access to student work or information without student legal consent.  This legal consent form can be drawn up by the university attorney with the guidance of the instructor of record.
  • The IA contract should have goals that are measurable and clear.  Below are some samples:

    - Attend every class meeting
    - Create outlines and present two twenty-minute lectures with Powerpoints on a topic assigned by the instructor of record.
    - Lead one in-class group warm-up activity
    - Create a lesson plan outline and lead one full class session
    - Design and implement an online activity for the course
    - Assist with other duties as assigned
  • A closure/reflection/assessment should be completed by both the IA and the instructor of record for a grade of pass or fail.  The IA coordinator submits the final grade.
