Selection of Student Designers

Valborg theatre productions and
Appalachian Young Peoples Theatre spring tour.

Student designers should meet the following criteria if possible:

  • Successful completion of the basic production techniques course in the area
    (Costume, Scenery and Props, Lighting and Sound)
  • Successful completion of Introduction to Theatrical Design
  • Successful completion of the design course appropriate to the project
    (Costume Design, Scenic Design or Lighting Design)
    or successful service as an assistant to a faculty designer in the appropriate area.
  • Junior or Senior standing

Priority for student design assignments:

  • Design/theatre technology concentration majors
  •  Other theatre majors
  • Theatre minors
  • Other students

After the season has been decided in the spring, a call for designers will be announced inviting students to apply for the available student design positions. The design/tech faculty will meet and make initial recommendations for the design positions based on the above criteria and priorities. The directors of the affected shows and shop supervisors will be consulted before the student design assignments are finalized and announced.

Each student designer will be assigned a faculty design mentor and will be required to register for THR 2108 Production Activity: Design. With the approval of the faculty mentor, an assistant to the designer may receive credit for THR 2108 Production Activity: Design.

Dance Productions

Lighting

Spring Appalachian Dance Ensemble Concert.  When the Lighting Design class is taught, the lighting designers for the Spring Dance Concert will be assigned from the class. The class instructor will provide the repertory plot. During semesters when the Lighting Design class is not taught, the principal faculty lighting designer will issue a call for student lighting designers and provide the repertory light plot. Student designers will be assigned to specific pieces after consultation with the coordinator of the concert

North Carolina Dance Festival (fall). A dance festival lighting designer is hired to design the repertory plot and coordinate the lighting needs with the visiting companies. When the local choreographers are announced, the dance lighting designer will issue a call for student lighting designers. After consultation with the faculty coordinator of the dance festival, the dance festival lighting designer will assign the student designers to specific pieces.

Costume

After the student choreographers have been announced, the faculty dance costume designer will issue a call for applications for student costume designers.  After consultation with the costume studio supervisor and dance faculty, the faculty dance costume designer will assign the student designers to specific pieces.
