Theatre & Dance Workshops for Youth

These workshops are facilitated by faculty, staff, and students who are pre-service artists and teachers in Appalachian State University's Department of Theatre and Dance. This program is accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. These workshops are faculty/staff supervised and offer great fun to the participants while helping pre-service artists and teachers become more dynamic educators.

Let's Pretend!

Offered to children ages 3-4
Preschoolers are great at pretend play and this workshop celebrates their
abilities. We will use our imaginations, bodies, and voices to play all
kinds of characters, dance, sing, and have fun. Pre-registration is

Pilates Teaser

Varsity Gym.)
Offered to grades 9-12
Pilates is a method of body conditioning that develops core strength and
improves flexibility. Anyone who is interested in fitness can benefit from
this gentle but effective mind-body approach. Here is your chance to
experience the true, authentic Pilates method as Joseph Pilates intended it.
We will introduce a wide array of exercises on the Pilates equipment as well
as mat work. Participants should wear comfortable clothes to move in and
socks. Pre-registration is required, no walk-ins please. Class Size: 12

Imaginations run free as students learn through literature and group-based
play! This workshop explores language and communication, problem solving
skills, creativity, positive self-concept, social awareness, empathy, values
and attitudes, and an understanding of the art of theatre! Note: this
workshop meets in the lobby but will move to a classroom in the building.
Pre-registration is required, no walk-ins please. Class size: 10-20

This unique experience begins with a tour of the "secret" backstage areas of
the Valborg Theatre. See where scenery, costumes, props, lighting, and
sound come to life! After the tour, participants will have a chance to
learn about career options in all areas of theatre and how to prepare for
them. Don't miss this special opportunity to learn about real-life
experiences in professional theatre, dance, and opera. Note: this workshop
meets in the lobby and will tour the building. Pre-registration is
